A café, hotel, or airport Wi-Fi portal may ask for an email address before it lets you connect. Before typing one in, figure out whether the network is genuine, what the portal is collecting, and whether you may need that inbox later.

Public Wi-Fi is not automatically a wiretap. The FTC’s current consumer guidance says widespread encryption makes connecting through public Wi-Fi usually safe. HTTPS protects traffic between your device and the site, but it does not prove the site itself is honest or erase information you give to a sign-in portal.

Is public Wi-Fi safe when a portal asks for your email?

For a low-stakes, one-time session, a temporary inbox may be enough if the portal permits it and you will not need the address later. Use a durable travel alias or secondary inbox for hotels, bookings, support, and repeat visits. For banking, account recovery, workplace systems, and sensitive uploads, mobile data or your own hotspot is the safer choice when available.

What can go wrong

The network may be fake

An attacker can create a hotspot with a name that resembles a café, airport, or hotel. Ask staff for the venue’s network name and password, if it has one, and compare those details with the signage. This helps you avoid an obvious copycat network, but it is not proof that every access point using that name is genuine.

The portal may ask for too much

The Wi-Fi itself can be genuine while the sign-in page collects unnecessary identity information, asks you to install software, or redirects you to a lookalike login page. Ordinary guest access should not require a work password, financial details, or a code from another account. If the page asks for those, stop and ask the provider why.

The local network can see some metadata

The operator may be able to observe that your device connected, along with destinations or DNS behavior depending on the setup, and the timing or volume of traffic. HTTPS usually protects page contents and form data while they travel across the network. It does not hide every piece of connection metadata.

You may disclose the address yourself

If you type an email into a portal, the portal provider receives it whether or not the network is encrypted. A VPN does not take that disclosure back. An alias limits exposure, but it does not erase the portal’s data practices.

The test is simple: would losing access later matter? If it could affect a booking, support conversation, record, or repeat visit, use an address you can keep. Before you join

  1. Ask staff for the venue’s network name and password, if applicable. Compare those details with the official signage.
  2. Turn off automatic joining for old public networks before you connect.
  3. Decline certificate installs, device-management profiles, browser extensions, and “special players” for ordinary Wi-Fi access.
  4. Look at what the portal is for and which fields it requires. A work login, payment card, or unrelated account code is a reason to stop.
  5. If the page looks wrong or keeps redirecting, disconnect. Use mobile data or your own hotspot instead.
  6. When you leave, forget the network. If you created a portal account just for the visit, remove it when you no longer need it.

Reduce passive device tracking

The setting names and defaults vary, so open the details for the network you are connected to:

  • iPhone/iPad: look for Private Wi-Fi Address in the network details. Some networks need a stable address for compatibility; that does not mean you need to disable the feature everywhere.
  • Android: look for Use randomized MAC or Randomized MAC address in the network details. The wording varies by Android version and manufacturer.
  • Windows: look for Random hardware addresses under Wi-Fi settings. Availability and behavior depend on the adapter, Windows version, and network configuration.

These settings can make passive tracking across different networks harder. They do not authenticate a hotspot, protect a malicious portal, or hide activity from every person involved in operating the network.

What a VPN can and cannot do

A reputable VPN can encrypt traffic between your device and the VPN service. That can reduce what the local Wi-Fi operator can inspect. The VPN provider then becomes part of the trust boundary and may see connection metadata.

A VPN does not protect you from a fake portal, phishing, malicious downloads, a compromised device, or information you enter into a form yourself. That makes it useful, but not a reason to trust the network.

A sensible travel setup

Before a trip, set up a durable travel alias or secondary inbox for bookings and venue support. Keep a personal hotspot or enough mobile data for sensitive work and suspicious portals. Turn on private-address settings, disable automatic joining, install device updates, and use official apps or saved bookmarks for banking, work, and account recovery.

You do not need to treat every café network like an emergency. Give sensitive tasks a connection you control, and do not hand over more personal information than the portal needs.

Is public Wi-Fi dangerous by itself?
